This is an early childhood parent education and family support program designed to empower all parents to give their children the best possible start in life. The program provides parents with timely information on child development, prenatal to age five; involves them in parent-child activities that encourage language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills; and strengthens parent-child relationships.

By participating, parents are preparing children for success in school and life.

Parents as Teachers is a program for children prenatal to five years of age. It began April 1, 2000 with funding from the VCHA SMART Funds. Initially we were funded to work with children birth to three years old. In January of 2002 received additional funding through Success by 6 to add a 3-5 year old component to the program so we can support children through the transition into kindergarten. At present we are serving approximately 80 families in central Vancouver.
Parents as Teachers programs are being offered in approximately 18 sites in Alberta and several sites in Saskatchewan. At present, this pilot project in central Vancouver is the first one in British Columbia.
Since 1981, PAT has been implemented in more than 2,400 sites in 49 states in the United States, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, the South Pacific Islands, the Virgin Islands, and the West Indies.

We believe that a Parent is their child's first and most important teacher.

Your baby begins learning at birth, and Parents as Teachers Program can help you give your baby the best possible start in life. Parents as Teachers is a free voluntary early learning program for parents with children birth to age five who reside in the Mid Town area known as Network 5.
